SUMMARY

The SAU Global Campus Writing Program has openings for adjunct instructors in blended and online platforms as well as at the site locations.

Essential Duties Summary

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • The successful candidate will teach IDS (Interdisciplinary Studies) 312, a 3-credit, 7-week course focusing on building academic skills critical to success in a degree completion program.
  • The instructor teaches a curriculum that integrates concepts of critical thinking, reading, writing, and research skills.
  • The successful candidate will be required to teach in face-to-face, blended (hybrid), and online environments as needed.
  • Some travel and teaching in the evening may be required. Additionally, there will be mandatory attendance required for annual in-service training sessions.
  • All candidates will be trained and mentored during their first year of teaching and, subsequently, teaching skills and classroom management competencies will be reviewed annually by the Director of Writing.
  • The instructor needs to have a proven level of competence in teaching students in a manner that displays balance, empathy and insight and with a continual eye toward transformational learning.
  • Students completing this course are expected to have a strong foundational grasp, and ability to readily apply, the skills they learn. Additionally, students will have completed a portfolio containing artifacts from which they will draw upon to support their academic growth throughout their program.
Required Qualifications

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • The ideal candidate will possess a Master’s degree and/or have had (is presently engaged in) post Master’s coursework in an area of social science (e.g. education, social work, business, nursing, general studies, etc.) and/or humanities (e.g. writing, rhetoric, history, etc.) where some element of comprehensive writing is emphasized.
  • The candidate should have evidence in her or his portfolio of thesis work and related writing assignments exhibiting competency in a broad range of academic writing areas.
  • Early doctoral work or All But Dissertation (ABD) status in equivalent areas, and possessing aforementioned portfolio evidence, is a plus.
  • Having extensive, documented experience as a professional writer in business, journalism, public relations, technical, academic areas is also a plus.
  • Additionally, the ideal candidate should have experience and a strong aptitude in teaching adult students in face-to-face, blended (hybrid), and online platforms. A candidate not possessing blended (hybrid) or online teaching experience will be considered pending successful completion of the SAUonline Faculty program and a probationary period.
  • The candidate should have a keen appreciation and understanding about concepts of research writing and citation styles, with particular emphasis on the 6th edition American Psychological Association (APA) citation and writing style.
  • Experience working in multicultural academic environments preferred and individuals from diverse populations are encouraged to apply.

ORIGINAL WRITING SAMPLE

  • All candidates will complete a writing sample as part of the application process. Write an essay of no more than 500 words using proper APA format that responds to the following:
     What is your philosophy about teaching writing at the college level?
     What are your strengths as a teacher (of writing)?
     What are your weaknesses as a teacher (of writing)?
     Where do you see yourself in five years as a teacher?
